Chimney Installation & WETT Inspection

When buying a new home or installing a new wood burning appliance you will most likely be asked by your insurance company to have a WETT Certified inspector perform an inspection on your appliance. This is so you are protected from an improperly installed appliance which could endanger you and your families life.

When a solid-fuel-burning appliance is located within a building, provision shall be made to vent the products of combustion safely to the outside of the building.

Every wood stove installation requires a sound masonry chimney (more on these later) or a UL approved Stainless Steel Class “A” Insulated Chimney. The WETT inspector will identify and ensure the proper chimney or flue pipe is being used.

A solid fuel appliance shall not be connected to a chimney that serves a natural gas or propane fired device. Only a solid fuel burning appliance certified for use in conjunction with oil-fired equipment shall be connected to a venting system serving an oil-fired appliance.

When a mechanical flue-gas exhauster is used, the chimney shall be capable of venting the flue gas produced when all the appliances not interlocked to prevent simultaneous firing are firing a their maximum rate at the same time and when the flue gas exhauster is operating.

If using a Thimble it shall be securely fastened to the chimney by means of refractory mortar to prevent displacement. A flue pipe may be reduced in cross-sectional area from that of the appliance flue collar, provided that sufficient draft is available for the appliance.

The breech pipe must be securely fastened to the chimney and be made flush with the interior surface of the flue. It must also be properly sealed with the flue to prevent spillage of any flue gases.

A WETT inspection is only recognized by your insurance company. If you are constructing a masonry fireplace or chimney you will need a building permit and have to have the construction inspected prior to enclosing with brick.
